Troubleshooting Your Shingle Roof
![]() | Algae Growth causes dark brown to black discoloration of the shingles on your roof. Sometimes mistaken for dirt, soot or tree droppings, it is actually caused by air-borne algae deposits on the roof. Removing algae growth can be difficult, but our crews can chemically treat the roof and thereby extend the life of your roof. |
![]() | Blistering is caused by moisture in the shingle itself. If the surface of the shingle breaks open, the effected shingles should be replaced. |
![]() | Buckling is generally a sign of improper installation or roof ventilation problems. The remedy is repair of improper underlayment or decking, replacement of shingles, and/or addition of ventilation to the attic space. Minimum requirement is one sq. foot of net free vent area per 150-300 sq. feet of attic floor space depending on presence of a vapor retarder. |
![]() | Ceiling Spots and stains are caused by roof leaks. A leaking roof is not to be ignored, as moisture in the structure of the house can lead to rotting and extensive repairs. If leaks are suspected, a thorough inspection by a professional will locate the source of the problem and allow for a recommended plan of action. This could include shingle repair or replacement, flashing repair, additional insulation, or total roof replacement. |
![]() | Curling is another sign of improper installation or ventilation problems. Inadequate ventilation and heat build up in the attic cause the shingles to dry out and curl up. High nails and/or not enough nails can also contribute to the problem. Correction of these problems and/or replacement of damaged shingles should remedy the situation. |
![]() | Damaged Flashing around chimneys, vents, skylights, and walls can be caused by improper installation, deterioration over time, or settling of the structure. Replacement of the damaged flashing and surrounding shingles usually corrects the problem. |
![]() | Missing Granules is often a sign that it is time for a new roof. Some granules will come loose as part of the installation process, but visible bare spots on the shingles, piles of granules in gutters or at the end of downspouts are signs of shingle deterioration. If you are unsure if the loss of granules off your shingles is normal or a problem, call for a free estimate. |
![]() | Missing Shingles are usually caused by improper installation and/or strong winds. Generally, if the roof is otherwise in good condition, missing shingles can be replaced and loose shingles sealed with roofing cement. However, missing shingles can be a symptom of poor installation, and a warning of future roof problems. |
![]() | Rotting is a sign of water damage to the shingle. Replacement of the damaged shingles, and often the roof is the best remedy. |
Remember professional assessment of the problem will allow you to decide on a plan of action that best fits your situation.
